Creek Tunnel

2023

12” x 16”

Ink, gouache, and colored pencil on watercolor paper

Attempting once again to combine incongruous yet related landscapes, I was drawn to the way the cliffs flanking this creek in Georgia and the Providence Tunnel aligned so cleanly. I wanted to use this instance as an opportunity to experiment with bolder color choices and semi-relinquished media control within an implied narrative. There were three passes. The first was mainly amorphous blobs of colored ink intended to form interesting gradations as pigments separated and settled. The second pass, in gouache, aimed to solidify the shapes and composition of the piece, and the third, in colored pencil, incorporated texture, finer detail, and heightened variation of color.
