Brighton and Oregon Coast Quilt

2023

16” x 12”

Gouache, colored pencil, ballpoint pen, and marker on watercolor paper

To continue with the notion of quilting together memories in my personal work, I used this piece to explore disparate landscapes in relation to one another. Using photographs I had taken from the top of a mountain and the base of a coastal rock formation on two family trips, I mapped a classic American quilt pattern. I altered the color of some of the star shapes rather than introducing the rock formation pattern to maintain clarity and depth in the overall image. I particularly enjoy the contrast of the cool, swirling cloud formations against the harsh angles of the warm-toned rocks.
