Tillinghast Cliffs Quilt

2023

12” x 16”

Gouache, salt, marker, and colored pencil on watercolor paper

In the personal piece, I leaned heavily into the fluidity of organic shapes and lines to contrast the geometric ones I imposed on the composition. Again using a quilt pattern for reference, this piece combined an image of the marsh lining the Providence beach and the coastal cliff faces of Cinque Terre with their swirling layers. I continued to play here with saturation, overlays, and continuity of color. I also included some salt in the gouache underpainting to create some natural texture and pigment separation as the paint reacted and dried. With these quilt works, I am also blurring the distinction between positive and negative space in a landscape that is mostly pattern.
