Sledding Hill and Coastline Quilt

2023

12” x 16”

Gouache and colored pencil on watercolor paper

This personal painting completely eradicates the notion of positive and negative space as these two competing landscapes are combined in an almost puzzle-like quilt pattern. Once again, I’m pushing the antithesis of organic and geometric forms as well as that of the two climates. This work really plays with the depth of the receding horizons and the flatness of the surface pattern, causing the eye to constantly jump between the two perspectives as it tries to decipher the image logically. I intentionally made the more legible image, the coast, upside down to multiply this effect. Separate but inseparable from the whole.
